Kristine Kotecki is Assistant Professor at Ball State University. She received her PhD in English from the University of Texas at Austin in December 2013. In her research and teaching, she focuses on how contemporary literature and film shape cultural memory and visions for the future. Her book project, From the Ashes of the Archive: Cultural Memory in Ex-Yugoslav Collections, 1993-2013, connects the dissolution of Yugoslavia with the rise of experimental genres for representing transnational regional belonging.

  • ENG 702 Directed Study: Postcolonial Theory (F15) – This graduate tutorial focused on key works in postcolonial theory and criticism.
  • ENG 654 Aesthetic and Ideological Movements in World Cinema (Sp16) – This graduate course will teach theoretical and critical approaches to films categorized as Accented Cinema, Regional Cinema, Transnational Cinema, Third Cinema. Students read in critical cultural studies, narrative theory, gender theory, and postcolonial theory.
  • ENG 425 Film Studies (Sp15, F15) – This course teaches critical film analysis and writing skills to English majors, screenwriters, and video production majors. It begins by developing a technical vocabulary and builds on this competency by incorporating theoretical readings to address historical, economic, critical and formal approaches to film analysis.
  • ENG 402 Cultural Studies (F14) – This course teaches students to evaluate cultural texts and discourse in theoretically significant and culturally relevant ways. It covers key theoretical texts at the intersections of Structuralist semiotics, Marxist political theory, postcolonialism, and media studies and adapts them into methodological approaches.
  • ENG 230 Reading and Writing about Literature: Literary Afterlives (F14, Sp15) – This core English major course prepares students to analyze and write about literature using methods foundational to the field. I sequence the assignments to incrementally build from formal skills to critical approaches to research in the humanities.
  • ENG 206 Reading Literature: Revelations in Post-apocalyptic Fiction (Sp16) – This introduction to literature for non-majors teaches critical reading and writing approaches. I will teach the course in a smart classroom and will emphasize collaborative approaches to analysis and writing.
  • ENG 205 World Literature: Technologies of Remembrance (Sp15, F15) – This course introduces methodological approaches and ethical questions to bring to the study of literature from contexts and translated from languages unfamiliar to many North American students. As a thematic glue to hold together an otherwise very expansive category, the class explores how personal and collective memories are imaginatively mediated in response to specific cultural contexts.
